Adopting a child is most definitely a huge life changing step to take. These days, children who are placed for adoption range in age from babies to older children. It has become less usual than it was in the past for babies to be placed. Bearing in mind the experiences these children have had, you can expect them to bring some difficulties with them. Most children in these circumstances will have experienced abuse and/or neglect, and may have experienced multiple carers. All this will have an impact on their ability to for secure attachments to their carers. These children therefore, need carers who can provide stability and patience. They need to be able to understand that, unlike raising your own birth child, your adopted child brings their own history and this is very much a part of their identity. You cannot, and should not try, to wipe out this identity. Adopting a child is certainly challenging, but very worthwhile.
